Keratin Smoothing Therapy is a non-permanent treatment that makes your hair smoother and more manageable, whilst also maintaining frizz.
Keratin Smoothing Therapy vs Chemical Straightening Treatments:
Keratin Smoothing Therapy seals the hair cuticle with a protective shield of protein and is not a straightening / relaxing treatment.
Chemical Straightening permanently changes the texture of your natural hair, breaking down the bonds in your hair and can result in major breakage.

Frequently asked questions:
Is Keratin Smoothing right for me?
- If you can’t leave your house without having used any or all of these heating tools (hairdryers, flat irons, curling tongs etc.) to tame your mane there’s a high probability that a keratin smoothing is just for you. Hair will be easier to manage, dry faster and be less demanding to style. It is ideal for anyone who struggles with frizz or has to battle unruly hair.
What results can I expect?
- Less frizz, manageable and easy to style hair in a fraction of the time.
- Results vary according to hair type. If you're not sure, request a strand test from your stylist to give you a realistic idea of what to expect. Your stylist can talk you through your options depending on your desired result.
I still want some curl / body in my hair, is this possible?
- Speak to your stylist and have a thorough consultation. The amount of time the treatment is left to process in your hair will determine how much your wave/curl will relax. If you have really tight curls, an hour processing time will significantly relax your curls to a softer more manageable state. If you prefer more body/movement, the processing time will be decreased.
Will Keratin Smoothing Therapy straighten my hair?
- Keratin smoothing therapies DO NOT straighten the hair. What they do is soften your curl/wave, block humidity, and eliminate frizz leaving your hair silky soft, shiny, smooth and manageable. All hair types differ. Keratin smoothing is formulated to make hair easier and quicker to manage.
Will Keratin Smoothing change the texture of my hair?
- Keratin smoothing therapies are NOT straightening services, they do not restructure the hair. As a result, hair looks more natural with enhanced body, movement and manageability. Curls and waves will be softened. If you want a straighter result, you may have to use a hairdryer when styling. However, this will be much faster and easier than you dreamed.
Will Keratin Smoothing Therapy remove body and volume?
- Yes, hair will appear flatter, Keratin smoothing reduces excess body while smoothing. If you still want some body and curl in your hair we recommend speaking to your stylist. They’ll be able to recommend the best treatment for your hair goals.
How does Keratin smoothing differ from permanent straightening?
Many mistake the effects of a keratin smoothing with a chemical straightening or a thermal reconditioning and think that once you have the treatment your hair will become completely straight. This is not the case.
- Keratin smoothing is specifically formulated to close, smooth and seal the cuticle (the outer layer of hair) to give a more relaxed and smooth appearance. Keratin smoothing therapies coat your hair with the same keratin proteins that are already found in your hair. Using a flat iron, additional keratin is bonded to your hair’s natural keratin to provide the kind of strong and smooth hair you will love to show off. Keratin smoothing targets only the outer layer of the hair, rather than changing its inner structure.
- Chemical straightening changes the inner structure of your hair by breaking the bonds and repositioning them into a straight form. Hair breakage can occur after a chemical hair straightening depending on the previous condition of the hair. You will also need to deal with regrowth in a few months when new hair grows.
- Keratin smoothing therapy does not cause chemical changes. Heat-sealed keratin acts as a protective shield over your hair and washes out slowly over time. Your hair will revert back to its normal state after a few months. You will not experience regrowth where your roots are curly/frizzy and the ends are flat and straight. On average, you can expect the results to last between 3-5 months (depending on product used).
How long does the process take? What is involved?
- The duration of the treatment will depend on your desired result and the length and thickness of your hair. Typically, you can expect to spend a few hours in the salon or less if you choose the express keratin service.
- Keratin smoothing therapies are heat-activated treatments tailored to your hair needs. Depending on the chosen therapy, your hair will either be washed and rough dried or the solution will be applied directly onto dry hair without pre-washing. Once our signature keratin solution is applied, it's left to process — with the duration varying based on desired results and your hair's texture. After processing, the treatment is rinsed out, and your hair is blow-dried until it's 100% dry. If you opt for the express keratin, your service concludes at this point. However, for those receiving the regular keratin smoothing service, the final step involves using a flat iron to seal the formula onto hair strands, creating a moisture barrier that diminishes frizz and imparts a glossy finish.
Will it damage my hair?
- No, In fact, it should have the opposite effect. Keratin makes up 95% of hair’s structure. By applying keratin to hair and sealing with heat you're repairing the outer layer of your hair, which makes your hair stronger and glossier.
- If your hair is already damaged, we recommend Rescue Therapy bond-builder and anti-aging as a complementary treatment prior to the keratin smoothing service.

How can I achieve long-lasting results?
To get the most out of your gloriously manageable mane, we recommend the following:
- Use the recommended range of shampoos, conditioners and styling products. They are specifically formulated to help prolong the lifespan of your keratin smoothing.
- Do not use products that contain sodium chloride. Sodium chloride will very quickly remove the keratin from your hair, washing away both the time and money you’ve invested in your new locks.
- Consider washing your hair less often, preferably no more than twice a week and Invest in quality dry shampoo to get you through.
What is the difference between SMOOTHE XT, SMOOTHEEZ and SMOOTHE PLUS?
After a thorough consultation, based on both your hair history and what you’re looking to achieve, your stylist will guide you to the most suitable treatment.
To give you an overall idea:
- SMOOTHE XT offers a flatter result
- SMOOTHE EZ provides a similar flat look but stands out as a vegan express therapy
- Opt for SMOOTHE PLUS if you’re aiming to retain curl and volume to your hair
When can I colour my hair?
- Hair can be coloured the same day as your keratin smoothing service (during your smoothe XT service or after your smoothe EZ service). Ask your stylist for more details.
SMOOTHE PLUS:
For lightening services (especially for a half head or a full head of highlights)
- Colour hair BEFORE the keratin smoothing service. Bleach willstrip out the keratin and negate the results. You can have a few scattered highlights or foil root touch-ups AFTER. Ask your stylist for more details.
For tint, semi-permanent or toning services
- Colour hair AFTER keratin smoothing. We recommend 7-10 days (with at least 2 regular shampoos in between) after keratin smoothing service for best results.
Can I get Keratin Smoothing service after other treatments? E.G. perms, chemical straightening, other relaxers or Keratin products.
Yes, you can!
- Keratin smoothing therapies are safe to use after the above treatments. We recommend you chat to your stylist about the best course of action when dealing with multiple treatments.
- You’ve been warned about the damage of permanent straightening. But if you absolutely must, you can still treat your hair to keratin smoothing therapies AFTER a chemical treatment. Permanent straightening will not get rid of frizz. We recommend SMOOTHE PLUS to eliminate the frizz. After a permanent straightening, your stylist will advise how long to wait before keratin smoothing therapy can be applied.
- If your perm is too curly, keratin smoothing will reduce the curl. Chat to your stylist about how keratin smoothing therapy can soften the curl down.
- Keratin smoothing is not designed to repair the hair, however it will help. It is formulated to smooth out hair and make it more manageable, washing out over time. If you have had a chemical treatment or you feel your hair is in need of repair, we recommend Rescue Therapy. Rescue Therapy can be used with smoothe XT, smoothe EZ or smoothe PLUS to repair, protect and nourish your hair.
When can I cut my hair?
- We recommend cutting your hair after your keratin smoothing therapy. Your hair will be less frizzy and smoother after treatment. Consult your stylist about the optimal time to do this.
Will my hair become oily after the Keratin Smoothing Therapy?
- In some cases, hair can become oily after a keratin smoothing service. This is temporary and will settle. Keratin therapies smooth out and seal the outer layer of your hair, oil from your scalp will sit more on the surface of the hair. Even though your scalp is producing the same amount of oil as before, your hair will not absorb as much.
Can I have this service performed while pregnant or breastfeeding?
- While there are no known adverse side effects, pregnant women and nursing mums should consult a physician before any type of treatment.
Can I do the Smoothing Therapy myself?
